about

Remixed, remastered and reissued, January, 2022.

Yep, it really was an innocent comment by my son, Jason, that inspired this album and, in many ways, reignited my interest in writing and recording new music...some twenty years after my last foray into anyplace even remotely resembling a recording studio.

I'd like to recognize several friends who contributed their time and talents to various songs on this album.

Jim Gaines and I first started making music with one another in 1969. That's when we formed Heather, a country-rock band that performed and recorded together for a large chunk of the 1970s. We've remained friends, ever since. Jim laid down the incredible pedal-steel and dobro parts you hear on "Distant Light" and "You Can Fly." Even after five decades, all I have to do is pick up the phone, give him a call, and Jim will pack up his equipment, truck over to Chez Nims...then lay down tasteful tracks that far surpass anything I might have heard in my head, prior to his arrival. Thanks, Gainer, for both the friendship and musical support, through all these years. You're one of a kind, pal...the finest kind.

Three other Heather bandmates from "back in the day" also stepped in help me pull together parts of this album. Ron Baumgartner's amazing drumming and Ron Sachs' equally incredible guitar/vocal work, along with Jim's contributions, transformed "Distant Light" from a Nimersheim solo performance into a virtual Heather reunion, forty-plus years after we'd disbanded. RB stuck around to add his distinctive drums to "You Can Fly," "Smart But Casual" and "Love You So." Yet another past member of Heather, De Stewart, sang those sweet harmonies you hear on "Time of Parting."

If the contributions of Jim, Ron, RB, and De prove anything, it's that musical friendships last forever. Almost fifty years have passed, since we first played together. Yet, here they are, decades later, helping me create the sounds I hear in my head, when I write a new song. It was a joy, working with these friends and longtime musical collaborators, after so many years.

Let's talk modern technology. It still amazes me that musicians from around the globe can collaborate with one another without ever being in the same place, at the same time. And yet, thanks to the Internet, this is precisely what happened with six songs that I've included on this album: "Smart But Casual"; "Fog of War"; "Beautiful Child"; "High Street"; "Ray of Hope"; and "Many Countries, One Sky."

These six songs feature a truly international lineup of musicians, none of whom I've met, in person. Each contributed their parts by exchanging digital files over the Internet. They're all listed, down below.

Everything else you hear on this album is l'il ol' me, flexing my musical muscles in my "man cave" -- a modest recording studio that modern technology I mentioned earlier allowed me to cobble together, here at Chez Nims.

Thanks largely to that amazing technology, I guess what Jason said all those years ago is true: You never are..."Too Old to Rock & Roll."

about

Jack Nimersheim Portland, Oregon

60 years.

That's how much time has passed since I first picked up a guitar, stepped on stage and started playing music for the folks "out there." I was 12.

Fortunately for me (and all of you) no recordings exist of those early performances. The albums on this page, however, provide a pretty good retrospective of the music I've helped create, over the past six decades.

Enjoy...
